Aspects of low-temperature-induced meiotic nondisjunction in Drosophila females.

چکیده

I T has been shown that aging females of Drosophila melanogaster at low temperature induces very high frequencies of meiotic primary nondisjunction of the X chromosomes (TOKUNAGA 1970). This paper reports the stage during meiosis at which this occurs; the finding that the nondisjunction is not restricted to the X chromosomes; and the finding of a positive correlation between number of retained mature eggs in treated females and frequency of nondisjunction.

Chemical induction of nondisjunction in drosophila.

Tests for chemically induced nondisjunction and loss of the sex chromosomes in Drosophila were performed. Of 31 compounds tested four gave rise only to an increase of XO exceptions, indicating the induction of chromosome loss. Six compounds, all known spindle inhibitors (colchicine, organic mercury, lead, and tin compounds) gave rise to an increase both of XXY and XO or of only XXY. The effect ...

Double or nothing: a Drosophila mutation affecting meiotic chromosome segregation in both females and males.

We describe a Drosophila mutation, Double or nothing (Dub), that causes meiotic nondisjunction in a conditional, dominant manner. Previously isolated mutations in Drosophila specifically affect meiosis either in females or males, with the exception of the mei-S332 and ord genes which are required for proper sister-chromatid cohesion. Dub is unusual in that it causes aberrant chromosome segregat...

The Meiotic Origin of Temperature-Induced Crossovers in DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER Females.

I T has been known since the early work of PLOUGH (1917, 1921) that alterations in temperature can increase recombination frequencies in females of Drosophila melanogaster. Two distinct, yet related, problems have arisen from such studies. First, does the additional frequency of crossing over represent gonial or meiotic events, or both? Second, does temperature act at the time of crossing over ...

Meiotic Mutant T H a T Permits a Premature Separation of Sister Chromatids I N Drosophila Melanogaster

mei-G87 is a recessive meiotic mutant that increases second chromosome nondisjunction in both males and females. A significant proportion of the diplo2 exceptions are equational. In females, diplo-2 reductional exceptions are usually noncrossovers, but, in equational exceptions, crossover frequency and distribution are the same as that found in the haplo-2 controls. The frequencies of nondisjun...

Origin of meiotic nondisjunction in Drosophila females.

Meiotic nondisjunction can be induced by external agents, such as heat, radiation, and chemicals, and by internal genotypic alterations, namely, point mutations and chromosomal rearrangements. In many cases, nondisjunction arises from a reduction or elimination of crossing over, leading to the production of homologous univalents which fail to co-orient on the metaphase plate and to disjoin prop...
